| Abstract: |
Indigenous fairs and festivals play a vital role in preserving cultural heritage, boosting tourism, and enhancing the socio-economic well-being of local communities. Despite their growing significance, limited empirical research has examined their impact from both tourist and community perspectives, particularly in Himachal Pradesh (HP), a state renowned for its rich cultural traditions and vibrant indigenous celebrations. This study addresses that gap by investigating the socio-economic effects of popular indigenous fairs and festivals in HP. Using a quantitative research design, primary data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to 513 respondents, comprising 264 tourists and 249 local residents. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, an Independent Samples t-test, Welch ANOVA, and the Games–Howell post hoc test in IBM SPSS Statistics.
Findings reveal that most respondents perceive indigenous festivals as important for preserving culture, promoting tourism, generating employment, supporting local industries, and improving community health. Notably, no significant difference emerged between tourists and locals regarding perceived socio-economic impact, although significant differences were found among tourist subgroups. These results underscore the role of indigenous festivals in fostering sustainable tourism and inclusive regional development. The study recommends strengthening destination management, upgrading tourism infrastructure, encouraging community participation, and adopting effective promotional strategies to maximize the socio-economic benefits of indigenous festivals in Himachal Pradesh.
